SWIMWEAR WITH THE 1940S GLAMOR

Introduction & Acknowledgement

Esther Williams in the Million Dollar Mermaid was dressed for the pool as one might for dinner, embracing all-out glamor. This Hollywood star was not only an icon for the 1940s and 1950s swimming musicals, but she also set the bar for aquatic styles and an entire contemporary bikini and bathing costume range is named after her.

The design is low in the leg and high in the waist, with bandeau-twist or halter necklines and ruched details.

This piece was written based on an article written by Beatrice Hodgkin from the Financial Times and she picked eight statement-making pieces to show what is meant by glamor.
