China is without question the largest apparel market. Sportswear is a very interesting topic and from the response of our readers, we found that this topic is the most sought after. It is still the market segment that can continue to grow.

Introduction
China, being the most populous nation on Earth with 1.427 billion, is not difficult for it to become also the largest apparel market. The United States, the most developed nation, has the very remarkable consumption power, is playing the second position. With the population of 327 million, it is only 23% of the total population of China. India is the second most populous country with 1.352 billion and it is still a developing country and the country is coming along. The rest of the eleven countries are all flat with their demand.

This statistic shows a ranking of the estimated worldwide total consumer spending on clothing and footwear in 2020 in different countries. Consumer spending is the biggest component of the gross domestic product as calculated on an expenditure basis in the context of national accounts. We picked only the top 12 countries for this chart.

Sales breakdown of the sportswear market in China in 2018, we can see that the total of sports-inspired footwear and apparel were accounted for 54.5% of the market.

This chart shows the retail sales of sportswear in China from 2014 to 2019. It reached 316.6 billion yuan which was US$48.34 billion. If compared this with the US Market, it was US$72.7 billion.

Since 2017, the market has been growing tremendously and it is no longer the 11% annually in according to Euromonitor International. If we compared the sales of $31.5 billion in 2017 with $48.34 billion in 2019, the growth was 53%. Nike and Adidas were still leading the market with their local brand Anta who came up strongly. Sketches came from nowhere in 2017 and took the 4th position. Li Ning was in the fifth position.

Closing Remark
From the report we can notice that the sportswear is a very strong market and it is the only apparel market that is growing. The numbers that we have collected were from 2019 but the world was hit by the global pandemic in 2020. Since then many of us have been told to stay and work from home, and our students and children are told to study from home.

Athleisure, which is coming from the casual sportswear, and it is the attire which has taken over the casualwear and homewear.

With the general public who have been lockdown for more than a year now, they begin to start to look trendier, workleisure has been defined and it is becoming a trend during the Covid-19.

We will dedicate an article in every issue going forward to talk about the growth of this trend and its opportunity.

Somewhere we read that the world’s largest market, the US, in 2019 it was doing $72.7 billion and in 2025 it is projected at $95.7 billion. There is an increase of 31%. The US is still the biggest player.
