AUTUMN/WINTER 2023
TREND REPORT
Paint It Black
Black is back as AW2023’s biggest trend in intimate apparel. Black is high-drama, sophisticated and seductive, as well as, moody, edgy and modern. The dramatic effect of a black silhouette is amplified with strappy details and cut-outs. Fabrics add surface interest in moto-style leather combined with tulle, lace, fishnet, and point d’esprit. Layering is important; meant-to-be-seen strappy bras under bodysuits were shown on the runway of Gucci. This trend is anything but austere and restrained; crystals and sequins add drama to all-black lingerie styles at Agent Provocateur and Dolce & Gabbana. Black is this season’s most seductive shade.
Comme des Garçons
Lingerie draws inspiration from menswear for autumn/winter. Designers take inspiration from traditional men’s suiting fabrics, such as wool and tweed, and cut sexy corset and bodysuit silhouettes. These meant-to-be-seen styles were shown on the runways of Versace, Fendi, and Valentino. Delicate touches of lace and chiffon are combined with prints and wovens in gingham, checks, stripes, and plaid patterns. Cotton boxer styles are cut for women at Fleur du Mal, while Dsquared2 contrasts lace and silk with a wide logo elastic waistband. The colour palette includes black, grey, and nude, as well as mustard and a deep turquoise blue.
Eclectic & Futuristic
Bling is infused with a bohemian asthetic in this elclectic and futuristic trend. Fashion’s current obsession with sparkle has been seen on the runways, as designers from Louis Vuitton, Mui Mui, Gucci and Dolce and Gabbana pile on gold, black, and silver crystals, sequins, and chainmail. The decorative applications on fabric are all about texture and shine. Sequins, embellishment, and excessive glitz are perfect for holiday collections. Silhouettes including bra tops, bodysuits, and boy leg briefs are definitely meant-to-be-seen.
Dopamine Dressing
Turbulent times across the globe always drive a surge in bright colors and maximalist styling, and we are seeing the bright colours from Spring continue into Fall in bright jewel-tones. Saturated luminous colors continue to dominate the runways of Gucci, Versace, and Paco Rabbane. Materials are often high-shine fabrics including satin and pleather. These reflective surfaces are accented with black lace and elastic trim. The colour pallette includes bold fuschia, cobalt blue, purple and green. These vibrant colors are worn head to toe in bodysuits, babydolls, boy shorts, camis and bra tops. There is no end to bright colours for Fall as this mood-boosting fashion trend takes over.
